I have joined the retreat and am loving how the tutorials are broken down into each stage. It feels less overwhelming and you can then watch each stage and not have to go back and forth trying to find where you left off. The way the tutorials are laid out is so simple to use. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. I’m learning so much about layering , blending and looking at a reference image. I can’t look at an image now without noticing subtle changes and variation in colour. It’s all really manageable and the best thing in your own time and own speed.

Kirsty Jane has said it well. I also like the way Helen speaks in an ‘adult’ manner. Her tone is calming and her use of language is not condescending, nor juvenile. I look forward to the journey with this membership.

I've only recently joined, but have watched the beginner videos and parts of the hare eye one. I can see (no pun intended) this being a valuable and rich resource going forward.

I love the retreat! I’ve learned so much in a couple projects I’ve done so far
Helen is a wonderful teacher. Explains not just what to do but why we’re doing it.
I love that you’re not pressured to keep up in real time with the projects being done. Specially during the summer it’s very hard to find extra time, so you don’t feel like you need to rush. You can do it at your own time but still see all the progress everybody’s making.

What I like about the retreat is that everyone can work at their own pace. I cannot always find time to felt, but once I get to sit down and felt, the lessons are peaceful and relaxing. The fact that the projects are divided in different parts gives a sense of accomplishment every time an element is finished.
One thing I definitely improved on by now is looking at the details and really studying the reference photo. I even look for extra reference photos to get a better idea of what I should focus on (for instance the cow’s eye)
As I cannot draw - I am absolutely useless with a pencil - I am actually amazed that I am able to create images with wool and a felting needle and get the materials to do what I want it to do. It just takes a lot of patience, and usually a lot less wool than I originally start out with.
I love wildlife images, so am very happy with the choice of projects so far. Having said that: I really enjoyed the smaller seascape project as well, so I hope there will be more of those in the future, and we will be able to alternate long projects with shorter ones now and then.

I’ve tried several tutorial groups since I started needle felting just a year ago. This is the best! Helen’s teaching style is superb. She emphasizes the details and always explains the reasons behind each step. I learned more in the retreat than I expected. The results are testament to her skill as an artist and as a teacher. The atmosphere of her tutorials is relaxed and unhurried. The variety of projects is great. I find myself anxiously awaiting each one.

I’m enjoying the retreat very much and have learned a lot. I’m new to felting so it’s a little overwhelming. It was really helpful doing just the eye and nose. It’s easier to concentrate on a small area at first. I’m ready to do the next one!
Suzanne
Thank you, Helen, for sharing your knowledge. I am learning new for me techniques and you are the good teacher! I am ready to learn bigger project as well.

I have been needle felting for many years, yet I have still learned new techniques and approaches. I’ve learned how to blend colors and the importance of carefully examining the colors in the reference photo. This adds a whole new dimension to the finished product. Even if I don’t choose to make every project, I look through them and pick out what I can use for my own projects. I look forward to continuing. 😃🌻

I love this retreat. You can do the projects when you have time. No pressure at all. Helen Winter Textile Art you are an excellent teacher and I love the way you explain how to really see the picture before you. I learned a lot from just two project i done. The third is on the mat! My needle felting is more 3D this far but all I learning now I can use on my next animal project in 3D. Thank you for creating this retreat.
